Spring Cleaning: Good for the Body & Soul

We all have that itch this time of year to do a deep clean of our home. Wash the curtains, clean the windows and really take a deep dive into that back closet of old clothes we never wear. Cleaning in Springtime feels innate to us, it feels ingrained in our minds as a chore that must be done. Why is that? Spring is a time for new beginnings and fresh starts. The air feels warm and cleaner from the frigid, sterile cold of winter. Flowers are blooming, animals are beginning to reappear, all signs point to anew.

We can all use this boost of fresh new energy to clear our homes, bodies and minds of emotions and clutter that no longer serve us.

Physical Space

What is driving you crazy? Is it your laundry room, home office or bedroom closet, maybe the pantry in the kitchen. Start with your biggest challenge and work from there. It may seem like a daunting task at first but once you get started you won’t be able to stop until you have completed. There are many schools of thought about organizing, tidying and decluttering, find what resonates with you and go for it. My suggestion is to remove everything and start at square one. Pull everything out of your closets for clothing, take inventory of all your spices, cosmetics, toiletries, whatever you want to start with and work from there. If your goal is to create a less chaotic work space, remove all items from drawers, desk, etc. Think about what you really need to complete your work. Consider alternative storage solutions like electronic scanning and filing.

We will evaluate not only the functionality of the area but also the feel, look of the space and work from there. I really enjoy helping others create places they love to be in that make them happy.

I would be remiss if I didn’t touch on what to do with all that stuff once you decide it needs to go. Donating is a great way to clear your home/office of unwanted items. Filling a need for another by either donation or selling will leave you feeling lighter and freer, it’s much more gratifying than just throwing something in the trash. Green Drop and other services will come to your house and pick up items as well. Local libraries accept books and DVDs/CDs. You will be surprised at how many items you can donate or make money selling.

Emotional & Mental Decluttering

Spring is a great time to establish new routines and habits. Have you been struggling with unproductive thought patterns? Do you keep falling back on the same detrimental habits to deal with stress, anxiety or lack of happiness? Use the longer daylight hours to take a walk after work or during lunch to soak up that sun. One brisk walk daily can elevate your mood and provide health benefits like lowering blood pressure, maintaining a healthy weight and strengthening bone density. Creating a physical fitness plan has over and over proved to improve mental clarity and promote overall feelings of joy and well-being. In addition to physical fitness, mediation has been shown to decrease feelings of stress and anxiety, increase attention span and give the mind a much needed break from all the hustle and bustle of the world. Starting a mediation practice doesn’t have to be hard, many clients state “I just can’t sit still”. We begin with just a few minutes of stillness and build from there. Time after time clients are astonished at how quickly they take to meditation and how much more relaxed they feel immediately after. While effects of calmness can occur instantaneously, many report on-going benefits. With increased levels of productivity being cited the most other benefits include, greater attention to detail, increased attentiveness at meetings and general over-all increase in happiness and patience. In the end, there is really no downside to meditation, it’s free and can be done pretty much anywhere or anytime without equipment. The only cost is time invested in yourself.
